I have given Los Angeles area 5 years of chances and have never been able to get very far professionally or personally. Has not been a good year for me and I would like to move some place where I can heal and be better than before. Hawaii has always fascinated me and I have looked at several potential opportunities listed online...but I don't know. I guess living on an island is a little scary because I have never done it before. I'm looking for feedback...How is the roommate finding situation? Marketing and or Admin type jobs? Transportation?

Re: Looking at places to move to.
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 4:46 PMRelocating will change the physical place of your body, not necessarily the circumstance of your life.
Visit Hawaii, talk with local residents, explore the variance of the islands, read books about Hawaii, talk to people that have lived or do live out here. It's fascinating and inviting and warm and friendly, but you've got to know what your getting into. Think and plan ahead, so you don't get stuck, especially if you're moving family or investing a lot financially to make the move. Know that public education and healthcare systems are lacking.
The answers to your questions may depend on which island you prefer.
You can find a roommate. Craigslist works.
Marketing/Admin jobs? Unlikely that you'll "find" one, but can you employ yourself?
Transportation? Oahu - yes, it's reliable and efficient; Big Island - no.

Sun, September 13, 2009 - 4:50 PMFrom the sound of it, Oahu would be your only choice. It is a lot like L.A. which is why most of us detest it. But the rest of the islands are semi rural to extremely rural and you would be unlikely to find either employment IN YOUR Field or public transportation.
