I haven't sent a message out like this before, So I do hope that the petition will be accesible to those who will help. I am but one woman, and I may not be able to save the world, but maybe WE can, so here's to each of us playing our small part in conserving our Natural IDentity. The NWHI urgently need our attention and recognition, as their fragile state of existence may be undermined by proposals to increase tourism, fishing, and development. Below is an excerpt from the site ~~~www.kahea.org~~~, the Hawaiian-Enviornmental Alliance, summerizing what the NWHI represent, as far as history, living life, and our future.

"THE NORTHWESTERN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS are a network of coral reefs, islands, atolls, and shoals that arches through the Pacific for 1,200 miles northwest of the Main Hawaiian Islands. These prehistoric landmasses are the oldest parts of the Hawaiian archipelago. Celebrated in stories of creation as the place where Hawai‘i began, these ancient islands are often described as the kupuna, or ancestors, of the Main Hawaiian Islands and their survival as one of the earth’s last remaining large-scale coral reef ecosystems is a critical issue for the Pacific region and the entire planet. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands ecosystem contains over 3.5 million acres of some of the world’s oldest living coral colonies and encompasses tremendous biodiversity. More than 7,000 marine species have been recorded in the NWHI among them, the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, endangered and threatened sea turtles, reef fish, bottom fish, sharks, corals, anemones, jellyfish, mollusks, sea grasses, algae and over 14 million sea birds."

This is a delicate eco-system as it is, so please find out more at the above site, and if you are feeling the importance of your small part, please sign the petition and send the message along, I truly appreciate your time. Below is attached another letter encouraging us all to get involved. Mahalo nui!

Hi!

I just added my name to the steadfast call for the strongest possible protections in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I am hoping you will too. It's shocking, but true, that the recently established Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument are under threat.

Despite eight years and 100,000 public comments in support of FULL conservation, the current draft of the Monument Management Plan proposes increased tourism, inappropriate research, and allows military activities with no mitigations. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands deserve a better plan that does not allow any further human footprint on this sacred, fragile region.

I hope you'll join me and many others in calling for a better plan. It just takes a few seconds: please click and add your name!
